Chicken raising is a meant to include enjoyment, amusement and of course the wonderful benefits of knowing you are eating healthier, all while enjoying those delicious, wonderful eggs.  But of course, as you are determining whether chickens are right for you or not, it is important that you know of a few facts.

 

Below are just a few things that maybe you were confused about, or had questions about in regards to chicken raising, and the intent is to give some incite on what it’s like to be a backyard chicken farmer.

 

Before we get into the interesting facts, I urge everyone to make sure you know your city/town regulations on rooster/chickens.  (Please check into this prior to building your backyard coop, or your new adventure may turn out to be more costly than was intended)

Facts on chicken raising:

  

  • On average you will spend approximately 5 to 10 minutes a day caring for your chickens

 

  • A coop is meant to be a safe retreat for chickens, so build it to protect them.

 

  • If you order baby chicks you must make sure to keep them warm.  The temperature needs to be about 95 degrees F for at least the first week, at which point you can begin dropping the temp by about 5 deg

 

  • One (1) chicken lays approximately 3-6 eggs each week

 

  • Nesting boxes should be off the floor

 

  • Disinfecting the hen house should be done once a year

    How To Build a Chicken Coop

 

  •  A pullet is a young female chicken

 

  • Yolk color will be darker with greenfeed, alfalfa and corn

 

  • Sprinkling lime on the floor helps eliminate odors

 

  • Putting fake eggs or golf balls in the nesting boxes helps your chickens get the idea on where to lay their eggs

 

  • Cat litter is a great solution and easier to clean up

 

  • Oyster shells add calcium to their diets helping to produce stronger egg shells

 

  • 12-14 hours of light helps your chickens produce normal amounts of eggs

 

  • Refrigerated eggs immediately, to keep them fresher longer.  

 

  • A Bantam chicken is approximately half the size of a normal chicken

 

  • Chickens love leftovers.

 

  • Your hens can, and will still produce eggs with out a rooster, only they will not be fertilized and of course will not hatch

 

  • An average chicken weights 4-7 pounds

 

  • Chickens usually live 8-10 years

 

  • Chickens are very social; it is recommended that you have at the minimum of two (2)

 

  • Brown eggs are just as healthy as white and visa versa

 

  • Eggs can keep for 2-3 weeks
