Build Your Own Chicken Coop

Chicken tractors are movable coops that can easily be repositioned anywhere in your yard you see fit.  This is a great solution for first time backyard chicken farmers.  Chicken tractors are also such a great solution for moving your chickens around the yard for purposes of enabling them to eat the plants and bugs in all areas of your yard opposed to being confined to one area.

Generally chicken tractors are at least 3 to 4 feet long and approximately 3 feet high.  You want to have something that is feasible to move easily around, so keep this in mind when deciding on the size of the chicken tractor you plan to build.  Of course this is all decidable based on weight, amount of chickens, and how capable you are in moving it, and if it is necessary for you to be able to move it solo or if you have help available to assist in moving it.  So take these things into consideration when designing your chicken tractors.

Chickens are often frustrated and irritable if they run out of vegetation and bugs to consume so this in not only the prefect solution for that problem, but also helping to keep your yard weed and bug free all year long.  Keeping in mind that they become agitated you will want to watch how efficiently they are doing their jobs of removing the weeds and bugs to determine how often you want to move your chicken tractors.

Did you know that your eggs will be better tasting if they eat bugs and weeds regularly?

Chicken tractors are also a great solution for the climates that are not always conducive to raising backyard chickens, allowing you to bring your coop into the garage on those over heated days to cool down or for those of us who are in the colder climates to remove them from the harsh elements of a bitter cold winter.

Don’t forget your chickens are working very hard for you and will need constant water during these times.

Also, chicken tractors, if you are a backyard chicken enthusiast, can be a great addition to the permanent structure you already have, enabling you to move our chicken periodically to clean and sanitize the original coop, while still allowing your chickens to thrive.  This is not always necessarily just a full-time structure; it can also be used as part-time structure, allowing you more freedom and access to different part of the lawn.
