Now I know that not enough for you to make the leap and I get it! People are always asking why? Why would I start keeping chickens? Sounds like a lot of work and time, and ewe…. they smell bad!! Well surprised as you may be to find out chickens are actually a great pet!
Here are just a few reasons why you should start keeping chickens:
Did you know that each chicken has a personality of its own just like dogs, cats, and people? Chickens are especially interesting to watch because of this fact. They will entertain you for hours on end with their funny gestures and the way they interact with each other.
Farm fresh eggs that are chemical free, and you know exactly what you are getting and from where! In today’s world this is a big bonus!
Low maintenance! A big plus in my mind. House them, feed and water them, and enjoy them.
Keeping chickens can also work as weed control and bug control. This is another great benefit. Your chickens love eating weeds and grass.
And most of all chickens are very inexpensive. Once you set up their home, they need food and water, and chickens will eat just about anything you eat, which makes it a great place to use your left-overs. (by the way, if you are going to feed them left over make sure to stay away from spicy things and garlic, or your eggs might taste a little strange). And if you don’t’ have a ton of left-overs to share, chickens pellets or layer feed are easy and inexpensive.
These are just a few great reasons as to why start keeping chickens and begin taking care of chickens. I hope you now have a little better understanding of why chickens as pets are great and I know that if you decide to start raising backyard chickens yourself that you will enjoy them too!!
